Job Title: Engineer position in Numerical Systems and Calculations

 

Area of specialization in IWRI Research and Education: Numerical and IT development and implementation of Climate models

 

 

Job description:

The International Water Research Institute (IWRI) at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) invites applications for Engineer position specialized in Numerical Calculations and Systems. WRI-UM6P is implementing, in partnership with Ecole Polytechnique (the X, France), a climate modeling project with the objective of developing a “North African” version of the coupled atmosphere (LMDZ) and land-surface (ORCHIDEE) components of the IPSL-Climate Model to improve the simulation of the regional climate of this part of Africa.

 

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the numerical/IT development and implementation of the model and develop a specific configuration for simulating the North African and Moroccan climate. He/she will help in the IT implementation and maintenance of successive versions of the model and will work with the UM6P modeling team. He/she may be involved in the research activity of the modeling team and in the associated IT activities with a variable balance between the two.

 

The successful candidate will have excellent programming skills in parallel programming models and excellent computing skills in high-level computer languages as well as a very good experience with UNIX/LINUX environments and scripting. A good knowledge and experience in numerical weather and/or climate modeling are an asset.

 

The job is part of a collaboration between UM6P (IWRI) and the Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (CNRS) of Ecole Polytechnique in France and requires from the candidate good skills to work within multi-institutional cooperation projects.

 

 

Key duties:

Successful candidate is expected to:

  • Implementation of the model on the UM6P HPC or another computing platform.
  • Contribute to the modernization of the model and the integration of new developments.
  •  Development of advanced numerical simulation codes and monitoring of model experiments in different HPCs clusters.
  • Provide support to other researchers and engineers to help solving numerical and IT related technical problems.
  • Develop test, analysis and visualizing tools
  • Collaborate with colleagues and scientists in the UM6P-IWRI and partner institutions including Ecole Polytechnique to ensure adequate achievements.

 

Profil recherché :

Criteria/skills of the candidate:   

  • Engineer (or equivalent) in high performance computing and numerical methods, weather and/or climate science, physics or related discipline.
  • Solid knowledge of high level computer and programming languages (i.e. FORTRAN, C/C++),   UNIX/LINUX environments and scripting languages (bash, Python, …).
  • Very good knowledge of parallel programming with MPI and OpenMP
  • knowledge of climate model data formats (NetCDF and GRIB file formats)
  • knowledge and experience in numerical weather and/or climate modeling is an asset
  • Knowledge in model evaluation methods and tools.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and writing are important. Fluency in French and English are required.
  • Ability to travel for missions of several months outside Morocco (e.g.  in France).
